#BookReview: Tall Man Small Shadow by Vipin Behari Goyal

On the jacket:

It is my debut English novel based on existentialism. Salil loves a shadow which transforms into many characters to reveal the secrets of life. Aalya, his neighbor, is doing research in English literature. Her guide Seema is a childless lesbian. Paul, husband of Seema, is a drama director. I am the protagonist, who coins philosophies for day to day events and my wife Sulekha is the second protagonist who makes coincidences happen with her artful manipulations. Read on to learn what happens when....

Review:

The author of this book, has previous publications in his name, but this is his debut English novel, and I must admit it has been a commendable effort. Philosophy webbed in fiction, Tall Man Small Shadow gets one thinking. Human relationships are beautifully depicted and if one looks at the cover of the book, there is a man standing and the shadow is that of a woman. Unique, isn't it?

Simple and interesting, however the pace takes a bit of a time to pick up, when you start reading the book. I was curious about how the story will progress, right from the first page and I was not disappointed. Aalya lives with her parents and her mother is unwell. Middle-aged, Salil, with some secrets in his past, comes to live next door. And this is were it all begins.

Thought-provoking, this story will urge you to think more about the finer and unspoken aspects of life. A simple book with short chapters, this will trigger your imagination.

Rating: ****/5
